Mystics vs. Liberty Preview

Tonight, tipping off at 7:30 pm on ION, the Washington Mystics are back in Brooklyn to take on the New York Liberty.

On June 14th, Washington traveled to New York off a buzzer-beater win over the Toronto Tempo—this time without the services of Kiki Iriafen. The Mystics fell 86-64. Michaela Onyenwere and Sonia Citron were the only two Washington players to finish in double digits; Citron closed the night with 12 points, while Onyenwere led the way with 17. On the Liberty side, it was Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart doing the heavy lifting—Jones with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting and Stewart adding 14 on 5-of-12.

Both teams are coming off close victories. The Mystics topped the Connecticut Sun 88-81, with Sonia Citron notching her first double-double of the season—and her first 20-point-10-rebound game to boot. Citron finished with 26 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, while also chipping in 4 assists. She has shown real growth both on the ball and as a playmaker this season.

The Liberty, meanwhile, edged out the Chicago Sky 96-95. Stewart and Jones were at it again, putting up 17 and 19 points respectively.

Now I know what you might be thinking—both of these wins came against teams near the bottom of the standings. But we’re at the point in the season where those teams are starting to make their games competitive. They’re figuring out what works and what doesn’t.

One of the most exciting storylines of the 2026 Washington Mystics season isn’t just the wins—it’s watching one of the deepest rookie classes in the league find their footing in real time. Eight rookies. Eight different journeys. Eight players are learning what it means to compete at the highest level of women’s basketball.

Coach Sydney Johnson has done a masterful job of integrating this group, and the veterans have embraced their role in shaping them. Let’s break down where each rookie stands right now.

The Rookie Class at a Glance

Two advanced analytics that I like to look at are PIE and TS%.

Player Impact Estimate (PIE): How the player statistically impacted the game or how they contributed during possessions. Higher the number means more impact.1

True Shooting Percentage (TS%): This takes into consideraton all of the player’s shot attempts and makes for the game. This also includes free throws, the higher the number the more efficient scorer the player is. The lower the number the less effcient of a scorer the player is. 2

Lauren Betts | Round 1, Pick #4

10 GP | 13.7 MIN | 5.8 PTS | 2.7 REB | 50% FG | 55% TS | 10.9 PIE Career High: 11 PTS vs Dallas Wings

Lauren Betts was drafted with a clear purpose—to provide relief for Shakira Austin and Kiki Iriafen—and Coach Johnson has been intentional and conservative with her development. It’s worth noting that Lauren’s last competitive basketball game was approximately two weeks before draft night, so the measured approach to her minutes makes complete sense.

Betts is in the process of unlearning habits developed at UCLA while simultaneously embracing an entirely new pro system. She has openly acknowledged that adjustment herself, and I respect that level of self-awareness immensely.

When Lauren is confident and comfortable, the talent is undeniable. Her footwork around the rim is beautiful, and her ability to score, defend, and facilitate is very much there. The areas I’d love to see her develop are her willingness to shoot—she can be timid at times—staying vertical on defense, and improving her positioning during possessions. Occasionally, she finds herself in the wrong spot, but that will be corrected itself with reps.

The trust between Lauren, her coaches, and her teammates is growing. Her transition is progressing well—the best is absolutely ahead of her.

Georgia Amoore | Round 1, Pick #6 (2025 Draft)

Georgia Amoore’s journey to this moment is one of the most compelling stories on this entire roster. After suffering an ACL injury that delayed her rookie year by a full season, Amoore did not waste a single day on the bench. She studied the game relentlessly—learning passing angles, identifying pockets for facilitating, understanding the nuances of the pro game before she ever set foot on the court.

Her first few games were marked by the kind of inconsistencies you’d expect from someone easing back in, but then came June 8th against the Indiana Fever—and Georgia Amoore introduced herself to the league properly. She went 4-for-4 from three-point range—a perfect 100%—and announced that she belongs here.

This is officially her rookie season, and she is running point. Her ability to facilitate and shoot has already shown up. What I’d like to see improve is her defense—she can get beat off the dribble similar to Rori Harmon—but adjusting to the pace and speed of WNBA guards is a process, and Amoore is clearly putting in that work.

Angela Dugalic | Round 1, Pick #9

10 GP | 13.3 MIN | 5.0 PTS | 4.2 REB | 51.2% FG | 55.6% TS | 15.2 PIE

Angela Dugalic has the highest PIE of any rookie on the Mystics roster—and if you’ve been watching closely, that number makes perfect sense.

Dugalic is the definition of a Swiss army knife. She does all of the things that never show up in a box score—deflecting basketballs toward teammates, boxing out to secure rebounds and extend possessions, and communicating on defense. She had some shooting struggles in her first preseason game, but she put in the work and came back better. That kind of response tells you everything about who she is as a player.

The part of her game that genuinely impresses me most is her fadeaway midrange. The footwork, the poise, the release—it looks like a veteran’s shot. Don’t sleep on Angela Dugalic, the numbers back up every bit of the hype.

Cotie McMahon | Round 1, Pick #11

8 GP | 17.6 MIN | 6.1 PTS | 2.4 REB | 1.6 AST | 38% FG | 48.2% TS | 5.5 PIE Missed 2 games — left elbow sprain

Cotie McMahon has the 3rd highest PIE among Mystics rookies, and her transition to the W has been nothing short of seamless. One word defines Cotie: fearless. She does not care who is standing between her and the basket—move out of the way or take the foul, because she is coming.

What’s interesting about McMahon is that while she is a traditional wing, she did play point guard during her time at Ole Miss—and that IQ shows up in how she reads the game. Early in the season, she had a tendency toward tunnel vision, occasionally missing open teammates while driving. I am happy to report that she has improved significantly—she is now actively facilitating, finding teammates, and making the right play. That growth in just a handful of games is genuinely exciting.

A healthy Cotie McMahon is a problem for opposing defenses. Keep watching.

Cassandre Prosper | Round 2, Pick #19

10 GP | 17.0 MIN | 3.9 PTS | 1.5 REB | 35.4% FG | 38.2% TS | -2.8 PIE

Cassandre Prosper was a surprise early entry into the draft—a true utility player whose defensive ability has never been in question. When I spoke with Cass during training camp, she told me that one of the hardest adjustments for her was learning how spacing works in a pro system. That’s an honest and important answer.

The early part of her season was rough in one very specific area: she fouled out of her first three consecutive games. Using every single foul allotted in three straight games is a learning curve that had to be addressed quickly—and she addressed it. Her most fouls in a game since then? Four. That kind of correction and discipline shows real growth and coachability.

Prosper’s energy and effort on the defensive end is undeniable every single night. Now that she is leaning into Sydney Johnson’s offensive system and adjusting her spacing, the offensive numbers will follow. The foundation is there.

Darianna Littlepage-Buggs | Round 2, Pick #30

Season Debut Pending — Development Roster

Darianna Littlepage-Buggs has yet to make her regular-season debut, but don’t mistake her absence for unreadiness. As a development player, she is limited to 12 games per season—and with 14 players sharing minutes on this roster, finding the right moments to deploy her requires careful management.

What I saw from Buggs in her two preseason appearances left a real impression. Her speed is noticeable immediately, and her basketball IQ is high for someone at this stage of her career. She knew exactly when to cut for easy layups, and she was a pest on the defensive end every time she was on the floor. When her number is called this season, she will be ready. I do not doubt that.

Rori Harmon | Round 3, Pick #34

7 GP | 8.9 MIN | 1.1 PTS | 1.1 REB | 1.4 AST | 22.2% FG | 37.2% TS | 0.8 PIE

What Rori Harmon lacks in size—she is among the shortest point guards on the roster—she more than makes up for in tenacity and heart. She is a fierce defender who competes on every possession, and her facilitating ability is what makes her valuable to this team.

Right now, adjusting to the pace of WNBA defenders and working through a shooting slump are two areas Harmon is grinding. Neither is a surprise for a third-round pick adjusting to the pro game. She was never known as a prolific scorer, but in this system, putting up shots matters—and she knows that.

What I can tell you is this: Rori Harmon does not stop working. Even when she is on the bench, she is locked in—encouraging teammates, studying the game, staying engaged. That kind of character matters in a locker room. The shooting will come. The work ethic is already there.

Alicia Florez | Undrafted

5 GP | 19.0 MIN | 4.8 PTS | 1.8 REB | 2.8 AST | 1.2 TO | 27.3% FG | 32% TS | -0.2 PIE

Alicia Florez has the best origin story of any rookie on this roster. She came in as a development player—no draft selection, no guarantee of anything. And in just five games, she made such an undeniable impact that the Mystics converted her to a full roster spot. That does not happen by accident.

Florez is a defensive menace—and that is not an exaggeration. Her court vision is exceptional, and she made an immediate impact in her very first game played. The way she reads plays before they develop, the way she pressures the ball—it is clear that defense is her calling card and her ticket to a long professional career.

The area I’d love to see her improve is her finising around the rim, which she is inconsistent at the moment. The opportunities are there, and as her confidence grows in this system, I believe the finishing will follow. For an undrafted player to earn a full roster spot this quickly? Alicia Florez is the ultimate proof that the work never lies

Eight rookies. Eight different paths. One system built on joy, trust, and accountability.

What strikes me most about this rookie class is not any individual stat line—it is the collective buy-in. These players are coachable and growing in real time. Dugalic leads in PIE. Betts is finding her footing. Amoore had her breakthrough moment. McMahon has corrected her tunnel vision. Prosper stopped fouling out. Florez earned her spot. Harmon keeps grinding. And Buggs is waiting patiently for her moment.

The Washington Mystics opened their 2026 WNBA season splitting a pair of games — a gritty season-opening win against the newly minted Toronto Tempo, followed by a heartbreaking overtime loss to the New York Liberty. Two very different games. Two very different stories. But both are telling us something real about who this Mystics team is and what they’re capable of this season.

Let’s break it down.

GAME 1 | Washington Mystics 68, Toronto Tempo 65

Friday, May 8th, 2026

How It Happened

The Mystics and the Tempo traded buckets all night in what was a closely contested opener from tip-off. Washington never fully pulled away until they needed to — building a commanding 9-point lead before the Tempo began chipping away in the fourth quarter. For a moment, it felt like the lead might slip, but Shakira Austin — after missing a pair of free throws — came right back and sealed the game with clutch free throws down the stretch. That’s the kind of composure you simply cannot teach.

Mystics Standouts 🔥

Sonia Citron | 26 PTS | 50% 3P | 62.5% FT | 2 STL

Where do I even start with Sonia Citron? She went on a personal 12-point run in the third quarter — the kind of run that swings a game entirely — and did not look back. The growth we saw throughout training camp is translating immediately. Her ability to handle the physicality of this game has improved dramatically, and it is showing up in every single possession. Citron finished with 26 points, just two points shy of her previous career high set last season against the Dallas Wings. One of these nights she’s going to break that record, and I have a feeling it’s coming soon.

Shakira Austin | 18 PTS | 11 REB | 2 STL | 2 BLK

Austin was a force on both ends of the floor, finishing with a double-double — 18 points and 11 rebounds. She was physical, she was present, and when it mattered most in the fourth quarter, she stepped up. That’s the Shakira Austin the Mystics need all season long.

Kiki Iriafen | 12 PTS | 16 REB (Career High) | 50% FT

Kiki Iriafen had herself a night. 16 rebounds — a career high — to go along with 12 points. The work she has put in this offseason on her game is paying dividends already. She was everywhere on the glass and brought a physicality that set the tone for Washington’s frontcourt. This is just the beginning for her.

Tempo Standouts

Marina Mabrey | 27 PTS — The Tempo’s best player on the night. Mabrey kept Toronto in this game almost single-handedly, pouring in 27 points. She is going to be a problem for opponents all season.

Brittney “Slim” Sykes | 14 PTS — Sykes brought her usual energy and chipped in 14 points of her own. The Tempo may have lost, but their backcourt showed plenty of fight.

GAME 2 | New York Liberty 98, Washington Mystics 93 (OT)

Washington Mystics Fall in Overtime Thriller

How It Happened

Let me be clear about something before we go any further: the New York Liberty were missing Sabrina Ionescu, Satou Sabally, Marine Fauthoux, and Rebecca Allen. This was far from a full-strength Liberty squad. And yet Washington still could not get over the hump, losing 93-98 in overtime.

The numbers tell the story. The Liberty shot 33% from three-point range compared to the Mystics’ 19%. That gap was ultimately the difference. Washington had every opportunity to steal this game — they kept it close through four quarters and even forced overtime — but the shooting efficiency simply was not there when it needed to be.

It’s also worth noting: Cotie McMahon (left elbow sprain) and Michaela Onyenwere (left knee injury management)were both unavailable for Washington. The Mystics were shorthanded themselves.

Mystics Standouts 🔥

Sonia Citron | 17 PTS | 9/10 FT | 5 REB | 2 STL

Citron continued her strong start to the season, finishing with 17 points on 9-of-10 from the free throw line. The Liberty made a point of being physical with her all night, and she responded by getting to the line and converting. That kind of poise in only her second season is genuinely impressive.

Kiki Iriafen | 20 PTS | 12 REB | 6/7 FT

Back-to-back double-doubles for Kiki Iriafen. She was the Mystics’ most consistent player across both games, finishing with 20 points and 12 rebounds against the Liberty. At this rate, Iriafen is making a very loud statement about who she is becoming in this league.

Liberty Standouts

Marine Johannes | 25 PTS | 46% 3P

Johannes was lights out from deep, knocking down 6 three-pointers on her way to 25 points. On a night where the Liberty were missing several key contributors, Johannes stepped up in a major way and was the difference maker.

Breanna Stewart | 23 PTS | 9 REB | 4 AST

Even on what felt like a quiet night by her standards, Breanna Stewart still finished with 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists. That is simply what elite players do. The Mystics had no answer for her down the stretch.

From The Corner 🏀

Two games in, and here is what I know: this Mystics team is real. They are not a pushover, they are not a rebuilding project collecting losses — they are a competitive team that split their opening weekend against two very different opponents.

Sonia Citron is becoming a star before our very eyes. Kiki Iriafen is evolving into something special. Shakira Austin reminds you every single night why she is the anchor of this franchise. And the depth — when healthy — gives Sydney Johnson options that this team has not always had.

The shooting from three is something to monitor. 19% against the Liberty is not going to cut it. And the overtime loss stings more knowing that New York was shorthanded. But the fight? The resilience? That was never in question.

Washington is 1-1. The Shot Clock is running. And I’m already locked in for every game. 💜💜💜

The Mystics dropped the first game of their home stand against the red hot Aces . It was the second quarter collapse (25–13 Aces) that doomed Washington. Despite a strong first half from Kiki and Shakira, the Aces steadily widened the gap in the second half.

Sug Sutton answered immediately with a clutch trey to tie the game at 82. But on the final inbounds with just one second left, Nneka Ogwumike hit a turnaround jumper to steal the win.

Short-handed or not, the Liberty showed why they’re still championship material. Missing Jonquel Jones, Sabrina Ionescu, and Natasha Cloud, the Liberty bench stepped up and overwhelmed Washington. The Mystics were outscored in every quarter except the first, including a 27–14 fourth quarter that sealed the blowout.

Issue: August 13, 2025 – New Faces, Familiar Fire

What Happened

Change came quickly in D.C. over the last week.

Brittany “Slim” Sykes—one of the Mystics’ emotional leaders and two-way anchors—requested a trade. The deal sent her to the Seattle Storm in exchange for Alysha Clark, returning for her second stint in a Mystics uniform. In addition to Clark, the Mystics received a first round draft pick for the 2026 draft as well as Zia Cooke, Cooke along with Sika Kone were unfortunately waived during this time.

Clark previously played for Washington in 2021 and 2022, though she missed the 2021 season due to a Lisfranc injury sustained while playing in France. Known for her defensive IQ, steady shooting, and veteran poise, she now slides back into a locker room that knows her voice—and her value.

In a subsequent move, Washington traded Aaliyah Edwards to the Connecticut Sun for Jacy Sheldon, a promising guard already making her presence felt. In addition to Sheldon the Mystics, received swap rights for a 2026 fist round pick. The swap rights depend on if Minnesota or New York ends up with the better pick.

Welcome Back, Alysha Clark

Over her first two games back in red and white, Clark has averaged 6 points and 2.5 rebounds, bringing the same defensive grit and leadership that made her a respected voice during her first run. She may not replicate Sykes’ explosive scoring, but her calm under pressure and ability to guard multiple positions give the Mystics stability.

Welcome In, Jacy Sheldon

Sheldon arrives from Connecticut with a reputation for scrappiness, quick reads, and hounding defense. On the season, she’s averaging 7.6 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.9 assists.

In her Mystics debut, she played 22 minutes, scored 8 points on 33% shooting, and added 2 rebounds—a promising start that hints at her fit in Washington’s defensive schemes.

No, these moves won’t fully replace the scoring punch Sykes brought. But they sharpen Washington’s defensive edge and inject fresh energy into the rotation. With the main core intact, the Mystics are signaling a commitment to building a team that can disrupt, grind, and outlast opponents.

Brittany Sykes’ & Aaliyah Edwards’ departure marks the end of a chapter. But in Alysha Clark’s return and Jacy Sheldon’s arrival, the Mystics gain two defenders who can change the tone of a game without touching the box score. The road ahead is still challenging, but Washington is retooling with purpose.

What Happened

The reigning champs rolled into Fairfax short-handed but still star-studded. The Washington Mystics? Unbothered. Fueled by defense, late-game poise, and a balanced offensive punch, the Mystics pulled off their second straight win in three days, this time toppling the Las Vegas Aces 70–68.

No camp kids this time—just fans watching a team find its rhythm against the league's elite.

Brittany “Slim” Sykes – The Spark

Sykes was electric. Driving lanes, midrange pull-ups, defensive pressure—she ignited the offense when it stalled and hit a pair of key buckets in the third to shift momentum.

Austin continues to anchor both ends. Whether it was her back-to-the-basket finishes or her ability to disrupt Vegas' pick-and-roll actions, she looked like the future—and the present.

Perfect from the field, fierce on the glass. Kiki gave the Mystics extra possessions and hit free throws when it mattered most. Her footwork and composure continue to shine.

Aces Check-In

Jewel Loyd – The Go-To Scorer

Loyd did her best to carry the Aces offense, using screens to get downhill and creating space with quick triggers. She hit multiple tough jumpers—but the Mystics forced the ball out of her hands late.

Chelsea Gray – Floor General & Enforcer

13 pts | 7 reb | 3 ast | 1 stl | 3 blk
Gray filled every column on the stat sheet. Her blocks, in particular, stood out—two coming on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter to halt a Mystics run.

Missing A'ja Wilson, the Aces lacked their interior safety net. Vegas still brought elite energy, but it wasn’t quite enough to close the deal.

Looking Ahead: Mystics vs. Storm

The Mystics now turn their attention to the Seattle Storm, a team loaded with firepower and on the rise in the Western Conference. Expect a high-intensity backcourt showdown between Sykes and Skylar Diggins-Smith, while the battle in the paint could pit Shakira Austin and Ezi Magbegor in a clash of length and mobility.

With back-to-back wins under their belt and growing chemistry between the young core, the Mystics are trending up—but Seattle brings a different kind of challenge: depth, pace, and a chip on their shoulder.

Camp Day games are always loud. But this one? This one was thunderous. Nearly 10,000 young fans turned EagleBank Arena into a cauldron of shrieks, chants, and unfiltered joy—and in the middle of it all, the Washington Mystics gutted out a two-point win over the visiting Chicago Sky in a matinee that had everything: clutch shots, controversial whistles, and a familiar face in a new jersey.

While Minnesota was without their star player Napheesa Collier, the Mystics were also missing the services of Brittany Sykes. Even without their star both teams were evenly matched, the final score of 68-64.

This wasn’t a blow out, but it wasn’t pretty either. This game tested the limits of the defense of this young Mystics team.

Fourth Quarter Grit, Not Glamour

Late in the fourth, with the Mystics and the Lynx all knotted up at 64, Courtney Williams tried to push the Lynx back into control. But Sug Sutton had other plans. She poked the ball loose, raced coast-to-coast, and laid it in.

Two point lead. Crowd on their feet. And the Mystics never gave it back. Sonia Citron sealed the deal with two clutch free throws with 7.3 seconds left.

Sutton had 12 points, 4 assists, and 4 steals—her fingerprints were all over this win. She controlled pace, picked her spots, and came up huge when it mattered most.

Frontcourt Growth: Austin & Iriafen Dominate the Paint

Aaliyah only played 11 minutes, but gave 7 points, 5 rebounds, and a steal. That’s just smart, high-effort basketball. When Washington needed bench energy, Edwards checked in and delivered.

Minnesota came in with the WNBA’s best record and a well-earned reputation for offensive cohesion.
